Affordable Housing Initiatives
Addressing the pressing need for affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity, in collaboration with the Carter Work Project, is developing 24 affordable housing units in Atlanta’s Sylvan Hills neighborhood. This development, known as Langston Park, includes a mix of single-family homes and multifamily townhomes, marking Habitat Atlanta’s first venture into townhome construction. The $200,000 homes will be sold to qualifying buyers at no interest, with income-based mortgages, providing stability and opportunity for families facing housing insecurity.
Health and Wellness Programs
The Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement (ARCHI) is actively working to redesign Atlanta’s health system. By collaborating with a broad network of partners, ARCHI aims to sustainably change the system and solve health inequities in metro Atlanta. Their strategic initiatives include the Atlanta Hypertension Initiative, aligning community partners and providers to prevent and manage hypertension, and elevating trusted community leaders to connect residents with care and resources.
Youth Engagement and Development
In response to recent incidents of youth violence, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is advocating for the creation of more accessible and safe spaces for youth. The city is allocating funds to develop “third spaces”—alternative locations beyond home and school such as skateparks, roller rinks, and athletic centers that offer low-barrier access, often supported by city or nonprofit organizations. These initiatives aim to provide productive activities for young people and reduce instances of violence.
Community Development Programs
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) offers various programs designed to make the Atlanta region an even better place to live, work, and play. Their Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) provides technical assistance for planning initiatives, helping organizations improve quality of life by strengthening access to resources such as healthy food and affordable housing. Additionally, the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grant program has invested nearly $24 million in planning studies and more than $390 million in transportation projects since 2000, re-envisioning communities as vibrant, walkable places.
